Rev. Fr. Geevarghese Jacob Tharakan is a devoted priest of the Malankara (Indian) Orthodox Syrian Church. Born on 27th June as the only son of Varghese Jacob Tharakan and Late Santhamma Jacob in Anchal, Kollam - Kerala, he was nurtured in a family rooted in faith and Christian values. He is married to Jibitha Varghese, and they are blessed with a son, Hanoch Geevarghese Tharakan. Mar Elias Orthodox Church, Meenkulam is his home parish.
Fr Geevarghese began his academic journey by pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in English Language and Literature from the University of Kerala in 2009. His love for theology and commitment to the priestly calling led him to undertake theological studies and earn a Bachelor of Divinity (B.D.) from Serampore University. He underwent his formal theological formation at the Orthodox Theological Seminary Kottayam from 2010 to 2015, representing the Diocese of Thiruvananthapuram.
His journey into ordained ministry progressed through sacred milestones. He was ordained as Sub Deacon (Yaupadyakno) on 03 June 2014, as Deacon (M’Shamshono) on 02 June 2015, and elevated to the Order of Priesthood (Qasheesho) on 04 June 2015 by H G Dr Gabriel Mar Gregorios Metropolitan of Thiruvananthapuram Diocese.
He initially served under the Diocese of Thiruvananthapuram, ministering at St Gregorios Orthodox Mission Center, Malayinkeezh; St George Orthodox Church, Cheruvakkal; and St Mary’s Orthodox Church, Channapetta. In 2021, he moved to the UK and he was appointed as a priest in the Diocese of the UK, Europe and Africa by H G Dr Mathews Mar Thimothios Metropolitan. His service extended to St George Indian Orthodox Church, Portsmouth; St Mary’s Indian Orthodox Church, Oxford; St Thomas Indian Orthodox Church, Taunton; St Elijah Indian Orthodox Church, Plymouth; and St Mary’s Indian Orthodox Church, Bristol.
